Acqualina, a Rosewood Resort in Sunny Isles, Florida celebrated their grand opening last weekend. Acqualina, which  was developed by Jules and Eddie Trump who also developed neighboring Williams Island, is the first Florida property for the prestigious Rosewood resort group.

More than 200 New Yorkers received invitations designed to resemble boarding passes with each pass outlining activities of the day.  On arrival they were whisked to their rooms with either an ocean or intercostal view.

Managing director, Florent Gateau, was on hand to greet the first arrivals from New York and Washington, DC:  Adelina Wong and Bill Ettleson, Olivia Chantecaille, Alexandra Lebenthal and Jay Diamond, Sylvester Miniter (wife Gillian arrived later as she was fulfilling her civic duty by serving on a jury and had to catch a later flight), Mary Schmitt Ammons, Barbara and John Martin, Lydia Fenet, and Caroline Coward.

Acqualina Friday Night welcome cocktails

On a warm and sunny Saturday morning the rest of the NY contingent arrived. Each guest to enjoyed customized three-hour treatment courtesy of ESPA, the resorts 20,000 square foot spa. ESPA is one of the best known spas in Europe and manages many of the top spas here in the United States although this is their first ESPA branded spa in this country.

Founder Sue Harmsworth was present throughout the weekend to meeet her guests, such as Jill Kargman, Olivia Eslami Ceijas of Valentino, Aida Khoursheed and Karen Towey of Marchesa, Vogue’s Valerie Boster.

Those who weren’t at the spa you were at one of the resorts four pools or on the beach with staff waiting to serve them.  Saturday night guest dressed for dinner at Aaria or Il Mulino –both on site at the resort – where they found gift bags filled with Pucciaccessories, a book on the history of Pucci and Allie Munroe faux crocodile stationary. – pink for the ladies, brown for the men.

After dinner everyone converged on the beach where the Snow Queen Vodka Sugar Shack Dessert Lounge was set up. DJ Frank Delour a favorite of fashionistas everywhere came in from New York and spun his tunes with the ocean waves crashing behind him. The big hit of the night were the Snow Queen vodka sno cones served from an old fashioned sno cone machine and the chocolate truffles that were infused with the vodka. Chris Crain and his wife Carina, Sarah Boardman Pendergast and husband Patrick, Law and Order SVU’s Diane Neal and husband Marcus Fitzgerald joined all the above mentioned guests for this last stop on Saturday night.

Sunday was the main event – by noon the resort had turned into a full fashion show arena with a runway and seating for 400.  At 6:00 the NY guests were joined by over 500 Miami VIP’s and some additional New Yorkers including Elizabeth Meigher, Liz Belfer and Town and Country’s Pamela Fiori.

Guests proceeded down to the beach where seats had been fitted with Pucci pillows.  The front row was a sea of Pucciprints as the hostesses for the evening – Alison Antrobus, Adelina Wong Ettleson, Jill Kargman, Jean Marie Kouri, Shari Menachem, Gillian Miniter, Kristen Munroe, Alison Robinson and Abby Zanarini took their seats each attired in Pucci’s resort line.

Also spotted in the front row were tattoo artist Ami James of Miami Ink and chef Rocco di Spirito. After the Fashion Show, Diane Neal and Rocco Di Spirito then got up to speak about the evenings beneficiary Safe Horizon – the national charity that gives assistance to victims of violent crimes.

Guests were encouraged to bid at the silent auction that benefited Safe Horizon and featured two items donated by Hostess’s – Allie Munroe stationary (Kristen Munroe) and the Antrobus bag (Alison Antrobus).

Rocco donated a years worth of his mother’s famous meatballs and Diane donated lunch with her and SVU co star Stephanie March. Deborah Yager Fleming director of marketing for Acqualina and her staff gathered 10 coveted trips to other Rosewood Resort properties including Cabo’s Las Ventana’s al Paraiso – which went for the high bid – the second high bid of the night went to a tattoo session with Ami James –who stars in the TLC series Miami Ink.

More than $30,000 was raised from the auction and other donations from Acqualina and Snow Queen vodka. It was a perfect night and guests went from cabana to cabana were food stations had been set up featuring the delectable delights of Acqualina head chef Ted Peters. There was a bit of a scandal when guests perhaps fueled by too much champagne begin to gather up all the Puccipillows – some took as many as 10!

Monday the NYers began to fly back to the cold but those lucky enough to book a late flight enjoyed an oceanfront brunch set up buffet style with lots of bloody mary’s on hand.

The 4th annual event to help disadvantaged children in Western Palm Beach County – An Evening of Expectations – was held last Friday night at Café Boulud.

The children of the Pahokee area of Palm Beach County live in one of the most impoverished communities in the United States. Most students drop out of school before graduating. More than 50% of the elementary school students score in the lowest 25% in Florida testing in math and English.

In an effort to solve this problem, two “charter” schools have been established offering greatly improved learning environments: the Glades Academy of Agricultural & Ecological Studies (80 students) and Everglades Preparatory (160 students). This is a good start, but only that.

A good education is one of the greatest blessings anyone can have and one of the greatest blessings for any community.
